Causes of the Order - Order of Saint George

Causes of the Order

Financial Needs of the Order

To carry out its sacred mission of charity and compassion, particularly in the Holy Land and the Middle East, the Order relies on the strength of its operational and administrative foundations. These vital functions are the unseen hands that make every outreach, every act of compassion, possible. By supporting this essential work, you help sustain the Order as a steadfast guardian of hope and faith, ensuring that Christ’s light continues to shine brightly in these holy and suffering lands.

Orthodox Charitable Outreach

The Order of Saint George the Great Martyr is devoted to raising essential funds to support our Orthodox Christian brethren in the Holy Land and the Middle East who come to us in their time of need. Through your generous support, we become instruments of Christ’s mercy and compassion, offering both tangible assistance and the hope that nourishes the soul. Together, we can shine as a beacon of light and love in these sacred lands, bringing relief and restoring dignity to those suffering in the shadow of hardship. As Christ reminds us in Matthew 25: “I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.”

Orthodox Educational Grants for Middle Eastern Christians

The Order of Saint George the Great Martyr is committed to empowering Orthodox Christian youth in the Holy Land and the Middle East, for they are the hope of a peaceful, prosperous future. By providing them with education, we are not only changing individual lives—we are shaping the future of an entire region. As St. John Chrysostom wisely said, “The foundation of every virtue is in education. It is the key to shaping the hearts and minds of tomorrow.” Through educational grants, we help keep Christian children in schools, enabling them to become leaders who will build bridges of understanding, foster peace, and bring stability to the Middle East.

Your support helps create a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the classroom—empowering these youth to rise above the struggles of today and guide their communities toward a brighter, more secure tomorrow. Together, we are not only investing in the future of our children; we are planting the seeds of lasting peace and enduring hope in a region that so desperately needs it.

Sacred Sites in the Holy Land

Of all the sacred places on earth, none holds more divine mystery than Jerusalem—the land where the Savior’s footsteps consecrated the soil, where He preached the eternal Word, healed the blind, cast out the darkness, and raised the dead to life. This is the ground where the heavens kissed the earth, and the divine manifested in the most sacred of ways. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a profound and sacred duty: to protect these holy sites, entrusted to the care of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, for they are not merely places, but living sanctuaries of Christ’s presence.

To safeguard these lands is to become co-workers in God’s divine will, to protect the living testament of His incarnation and His miracles. It is to preserve the sacred mysteries that dwell within these holy places, where time and eternity meet, and the spirit of Christ continues to touch all who approach. Let us rise with reverence and devotion, knowing that by protecting what is sacred, we honor the divine mystery itself and keep the light of Christ’s love burning brightly, not just for us, but for all the generations to come.

Orthodox Clergy in Need

The Order of Saint George the Great Martyr is steadfast in its commitment to support the Orthodox clergy who have faithfully devoted their lives to the service of God and His Church. In their later years, as they face the challenges of old age and need, it is our sacred duty to ensure they are cared for with the same devotion and love they gave to the flock. These holy servants, who have labored tirelessly for the salvation of souls, deserve our unwavering support and respect.

Through your generosity, we can provide for their physical and spiritual needs, allowing them to live their final years in peace and dignity. By assisting those who have served the Church with selflessness and grace, we honor their legacy and continue to serve God’s work in a tangible and loving way. Together, we fulfill the commandment to care for the shepherds of the Church, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten, but instead, met with the compassion and care they have so faithfully shown to others.

Christian Orphans

The Order of Saint George the Great Martyr is committed to the sacred responsibility of caring for the Christian orphans of the Holy Land and the Middle East. These children, who have faced the loss of their families and the harshest of circumstances, are not just distant souls—they are our own, our brothers and sisters in Christ. As Christians, it is not just a calling, but a deep responsibility to embrace them as part of our family. Their suffering is our suffering, their hope is our hope. We are bound to them, not by obligation alone, but by love and compassion.

Through your support, we offer them more than basic care—we offer them a future, a life filled with opportunity, and the unconditional love of a global Christian family that will never let them walk alone. It is our Christian duty to stand beside them, to guide them, and to ensure that their lives are filled with the warmth and security they deserve. These children need us, and as a community of believers, we must rise to the challenge. Let us be the hands that lift them, the hearts that heal them, and the family that surrounds them with love, showing them they are never abandoned and always cherished in the family of Christ.

Acts of Mercy

As a Christian organization rooted in the unshakable love of Christ, the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr does not turn its gaze away from those outside the canonical Orthodox Church. Instead, we see in every person an opportunity to extend the mercy of God. Our mission is to offer aid and compassion wherever it is needed, evaluating each situation on a case-by-case basis with the wisdom of discernment and the heart of Christ’s boundless love.

These Acts of Mercy are far more than acts of charity—they stand as a living testament to the transformative power of the True Faith established by Christ. By extending our assistance to non-Orthodox Christians and even to non-Christians, we hope to open hearts to the fullness of the Orthodox Church, guiding them toward the radiant light of Christ. In helping those beyond our own spiritual borders whenever we can, we plant seeds of faith, offering not only tangible relief but also the hope of eternal communion with God. Through Acts of Mercy, we affirm the universality of Christ’s love and the Church’s divine role as a sanctuary and beacon of salvation for all humankind.

Saint Porphyrios Orthodox Church & the Christian Community of Gaza

The Christian community in Gaza shines as a beacon of unyielding resilience, its faith enduring unbroken for over two millennia. Among the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East, it is anchored by the Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrios—a sacred treasure of our faith, the third-oldest church in the world and the oldest in Gaza.

In these times of profound tribulation, the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr has been uniquely authorized and blessed by His Eminence Archbishop Alexios, the patriarchal representative in Gaza, to raise critical funds for Gaza’s Orthodox Christians. As an international non-governmental organization, our mission is unwavering: to stand with Archbishop Alexios, his cherished flock, and all those seeking refuge within the sacred walls of the last two Christian churches in Gaza.

For nearly thirty years, Archbishop Alexios has led his people with steadfast faith, guiding them through trials and triumphs. Today, amidst unimaginable suffering—having witnessed the bombing of his church and the tragic deaths of 18 of his parishioners—he issues a sacred plea—not for himself, but for the community he serves and loves:

  1. Life-Sustaining Essentials: Food, Water, and Medicine

In Gaza, the simplest necessities of life have become luxuries beyond reach. Groceries, clean water, and basic medical care—essentials we often take for granted—are scarce or nonexistent. Families sheltering at the Church of Saint Porphyrios and the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Family have lost everything. Beneath the sheltering wings of these sacred havens, they cling to survival. They need food to strengthen their bodies, clean water to sustain their lives, and medicine to heal their wounds.

  1. Rebuilding Lives and Homes

Imagine losing not just your home, but the dream of security it once held—not once, but time and time again. Many families in Gaza, having already rebuilt after previous devastation, now stand amid ruin once more. Archbishop Alexios calls upon us to rebuild—not just homes of brick and stone, but sanctuaries of hope, dignity, and resilience. These homes will stand as symbols of faith triumphant, proving that even in the face of unimaginable loss, life and community endure.

  1. Restoring the Church: A Testament to Faith

The Church of Saint Porphyrios has stood as a silent witness to centuries of devotion, a testament to the enduring strength of Christianity through eras of peace and conflict. Now, its walls bear the scars of violence, crying out for restoration. But even in this, Archbishop Alexios remains steadfast in his priorities: “The Church,” he declares, “is not just the building—it is the faithful.” His every action reminds us that the true essence of the Church lies within its people: the living, breathing body of Christ, found in every soul who seeks solace within its sacred embrace.

A Sacred Calling

As Christ teaches in Matthew 25: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.” When we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and provide shelter for the homeless, we serve the Lord Himself. Through our compassion, we do more than meet physical needs; we restore hope, affirm dignity, and fan the flames of faith that no darkness can extinguish.

The Order of Saint George stands resolute, deploying every resource to aid Archbishop Alexios and his suffering community. But this sacred mission demands more than organizational strength—it calls for the united resolve of the global Christian family. We need you—your prayers, your support, and your hands extended in love. Together, we will rise to meet the needs of those seeking refuge at St. Porphyrios and the Catholic Church of the Holy Family. Together, we will proclaim to the world that these men, women, and children are seen, cherished, and never forsaken.

Now is the time

The time to act is now. This is the moment to rise in support. In the face of suffering, we stand united—driven by faith, bound by love, and strengthened by the unshakable grace of God. Let us carry this mission forward, lifting our brothers and sisters in Gaza, and in doing so, honoring Christ Himself.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Of all the Patriarchates the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr seeks to protect and uplift, none holds greater significance than the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. It is here, in the sacred city where heaven touched earth, that our faith finds its holiest ground. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem stands as the guardian of the most sacred sites of Christianity—the places where the divine mysteries unfolded before humanity.

It is in this hallowed land that the Magi from the East bowed in adoration before the Christ Child, where Christ Himself grew in wisdom and stature, preached the Gospel, healed the sick, raised the dead, and bore witness to the ultimate act of love through His crucifixion. It is here that He triumphed over death, rose in glory, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and where the Church was born through the descent of the Holy Spirit.

The Patriarchate and these Holy Sites are not only treasures of our faith but a living testament to the salvation history of all mankind. They require our unwavering attention and collective protection. As heirs of this sacred legacy, it is our solemn duty to ensure that these holy places and those under the care of the Patriarchate are safeguarded for centuries to come, standing as eternal witnesses to the love and glory of God.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch

The Church of Antioch holds profound significance for the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr. It was in Antioch that the disciples of Christ were first called “Christians,” marking a defining moment in the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles and the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Established by the Apostle Peter, who served as its first Bishop, Antioch became a cornerstone of early Christianity and a vital center of missionary activity. From this sacred city, the Apostle Paul began his missionary journeys, carrying the message of salvation to the ends of the earth.

Antioch exemplified the unity and diversity of the early Church, uniting Jewish and Gentile believers under one faith in Christ. It served as a model for Christian communities, embodying the universality of the Gospel. Nicolas, one of the Seven Deacons, also hailed from Antioch, further highlighting the city’s role in spreading the faith.

Antioch’s legacy is further enriched as the birthplace of Saint John Chrysostom, one of the Church’s greatest Fathers, whose eloquent preaching and profound theological insights continue to illuminate the path of the faithful.

For the Order, the Patriarchate of Antioch stands as a living witness to the Church’s apostolic foundations and missionary zeal. It is our sacred duty to protect and support this venerable Patriarchate as it upholds the faith and continues the mission of Christ in a world yearning for His truth and light.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria

The Church of Alexandria, founded by the Apostle Mark, stands as a monumental pillar of faith and a cornerstone of divine revelation, carrying profound significance for the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr. This sacred land is the setting of some of the most pivotal moments in salvation history. It was here that God, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, revealed Himself to Moses through the burning bush, calling him to lead His people from the chains of Pharaoh’s oppression. It was here that the Holy Family, fleeing the wrath of King Herod, sought refuge, transforming Egypt into a divine sanctuary for the Christ Child, marking the beginning of God’s protection over the Savior of the world.

Alexandria, under the Apostolic guidance of Saint Mark, became a fount of divine wisdom, where the early Church’s faith was nurtured and fortified. It was here that the Church produced some of its greatest Fathers, including Saints Athanasius and Cyril, whose steadfast defense of the truth of Christ’s divinity and their unwavering commitment to the unity of the Church have shaped the foundation of Christian theology for centuries.

For the Order, the Patriarchate of Alexandria is not merely a place of historical importance—it is a living embodiment of God’s eternal providence, a beacon of spiritual strength that has withstood the trials of time. It is our sacred responsibility and honor to protect and uphold this venerable Patriarchate, ensuring that its light continues to shine brightly in a land sanctified by divine encounters and the presence of the Holy Family. Together, we stand as custodians of this blessed legacy, committed to safeguarding the future of the Church and the salvation it brings to all.

The Greek Orthodox Autonomous Church of Mount Sinai

The Autonomous Church of Mount Sinai, with its ancient Monastery of Saint Catherine and its sacred dependencies, stands as a profound and enduring symbol of faith, revered not only by Christians but by the broader Abrahamic traditions. It is at the foot of Mount Sinai where God first spoke to Moses from the burning bush, revealing His holy name and calling him to deliver the Israelites from Pharaoh’s captivity. This moment marked the birth of the divine covenant and laid the foundation for the faith that would guide God’s people to freedom.

Founded in the 6th century by Roman Emperor Justinian I, the Monastery of Saint Catherine is a beacon of Christian monastic life and spiritual wisdom. It is home to the world’s oldest continuously operating Christian library, containing treasured manuscripts and icons that stand as living witnesses to the deep faith and rich history of the Church. In its early years, the monastery welcomed pilgrims from across the Christian world, its fame spreading far beyond the borders of Christendom, and it continues to be a place of refuge and pilgrimage today.

In Islamic tradition, Mount Sinai and the surrounding area also hold great reverence. The Prophet Muhammad recognized the significance of the region, and within the monastery’s ancient library exists a personal letter from the Prophet, granting protection and privileges to the Christian community. This letter, sealed with the Prophet’s hand, stands as a remarkable testament to the respect and mutual protection between the Abrahamic faiths, acknowledging the sacredness of the land and its importance to all who believe in the One True God.

For the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr, the Church of Mount Sinai represents a powerful intersection of faith, history, and divine presence. It is our sacred responsibility to protect and preserve the Monastery of Saint Catherine and its holy grounds, ensuring that this ancient site continues to be a place of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal for all who seek God. In upholding this holy legacy, we honor the shared history of the Abrahamic faiths and embrace our common calling to safeguard the treasures of the faith, passed down through generations, for future generations to come.
