Holy Fire Jerusalem

Jerusalem 11th of April 2026

In the heart of Jerusalem’s Old City, within the sacred walls of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre—the very place of Christ’s Crucifixion, burial, and glorious Resurrection—the miracle of the Holy Fire has once again been revealed to the world.

At approximately 2:14 PM, the Holy Light descended within the Edicule, the small chapel built over the life-giving Tomb of Christ. Just minutes before, His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem had entered alone into the Tomb, having first been carefully inspected to ensure that no earthly means could produce the flame. The doors were sealed with wax—a visible testimony to the authenticity and solemnity of what was to occur.

Within that sacred stillness, the Patriarch knelt in prayer.

And then—the Light came.

A divine flame, not kindled by human hand, appeared from within the Tomb of Christ, illuminating the darkness with a brilliance that has drawn the faithful for centuries. Emerging from the Edicule, the Patriarch carried the Holy Fire and shared it with the faithful, who received it with awe, reverence, and tears of joy. From candle to candle, the flame spread rapidly throughout the Church, transforming it into a sea of living light.

The faithful held bundles of 33 candles—symbolic of the earthly years of our Lord Jesus Christ—lifting them as both offering and witness. In that moment, time itself seemed to stand still, as heaven and earth met in the place of the Resurrection.

This sacred event was preceded by an ancient and meticulous rite. The Tomb had been inspected and sealed, affirming that no natural source of fire was present. A lampada and the Patriarch’s candles were placed within before the doors were closed. Outside, clergy and faithful prayed fervently, awaiting the moment when God would once again reveal His glory.

This year, the miracle bore even deeper significance.

For forty days, access to the Holy Sepulchre had been restricted amid regional conflict. The doors—so central to the spiritual life of millions—remained closed to pilgrims. Yet, by God’s providence, the Church reopened on Holy Thursday, allowing the faithful to gather once more for the sacred services of Holy Week and to witness the descent of the Holy Fire.

In this moment of profound spiritual importance, the Holy Orthodox Order of Saint George the Great Martyr was honored to bring this sacred event to North America through its official livestream, allowing the faithful across the continent and beyond to stand—virtually yet prayerfully—within the Church and bear witness to the miracle as it unfolded in real time. Through this effort, countless souls were united in prayer, transcending borders and distance to encounter the Light of Christ from His Holy Tomb.

Through the dedicated efforts of our brother Sami Wakileh and his company, Studio Sami—the sole local Christian media company permitted to film this holy moment—the world was able to witness the miracle with clarity and reverence.

The Order extends its deepest gratitude to Sami, to Anton Shahatit Abu George, and to the entire team for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and profound reverence in capturing and sharing this sacred event.

Their tireless work has made it possible for countless faithful around the world to witness this holy mystery with dignity and authenticity.

For those who were unable to join the livestream—or who wish to witness this sacred moment once more—a full recording of the Holy Fire ceremony is available to rewatch on the Order’s official Facebook and YouTube pages.

In an age of uncertainty and division, this sacred light reached across nations, reminding all who beheld it that Christ’s victory over death is not a memory of the past, but a living and eternal reality.

The Holy Fire is not merely a tradition.

It is a testimony.

A testimony that the Tomb is empty.

A testimony that the Light shines in the darkness—and the darkness has not overcome it.

As the flame was carried from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, it bore with it a message for all humanity:

Christ is Risen.

The Light has come.

And it shall never be extinguished.

The Order of Saint George the Great Martyr remains steadfast in its sacred mission to support and preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land and across the Middle East. We invite all people of faith and goodwill to stand with us in this mission—to protect the living stones of the Church, to uphold the dignity of Christian communities, and to ensure that the Light of Christ continues to shine from the very place where it first dawned upon the world.
