The Most Meritorious Order of the Holy Spirit is a lay Orthodox Christian order of chivalry conferred on both Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians, either through application or by bestowal. It serves as a companion order to the Holy Orthodox Order of Saint George the Great Martyr, with equal honor and distinction. Both Orders share the same administrative hierarchy and Grand Magistry, operating without separation.
When bestowed, the Order of the Holy Spirit is granted as an order of merit.
It reflects the Grand Knight’s recognition of extraordinary service rendered to
either the Orthodox Church or the Order of Saint George the Great Martyr. This
honor is reserved for individuals who have undertaken responsibilities or
displayed abilities significantly beyond expectations, or who have performed
actions in an excellent manner that greatly benefit the broader Orthodox
Christian world.
Before the Order of the Holy Spirit is bestowed upon non-canonical Orthodox
Christians or individuals outside the Orthodox Church, the Grand Knight must
consult with the Supreme Spiritual Advisor. In such cases, the brevet
(certificate) of appointment is signed by both the Grand Knight and the Supreme
Spiritual Advisor or his Clerical Representative.
When conferred by application, the Order of the Holy Spirit is awarded
exclusively to individuals who actively support the works and activities of the
Order of Saint George the Great Martyr. Those invested through application or
bestowal are recognized as a distinct class of non-voting, companion members of
the Holy Orthodox Order of Saint George the Great Martyr. They may participate
fully in the Order’s social life and activities without restriction. Unlike
bestowals, applications for membership do not require consultation with the
Supreme Spiritual Advisor.
The insignia of the Most Meritorious Order of the Holy Spirit, like the
medals of the Holy Orthodox Order of Saint George the Great Martyr, must be
worn with care and in appropriate, formal attire. Recipients are expected to
observe the Order’s protocol for wearing medals, ensuring the dignity and honor
of the distinction are upheld.
